Quarterly Beer Report (Q1)

dsc02471I’m not a full-blown ticker. However, in looking at some of the beer resumes submitted for Wynkoop’s Beer Drinker of the Year competition, it got me wondering just how many different beers I might get into through the course of 365 days.

Certainly not the quadrabillion it takes to win BDotY. Not the number of brewery tours it takes. Not the European travel. Not the bottle cap collecting. Not the bar mats. Not the labels. I have only two taps in my basement, not six.

I am but a humble beer drinker. But how many beers? I’ve decided to find out. With great care, I’ve learned that in the first three months of 2009, I’ve managed to try 123 different beers. Forty of those are commercial beers that are new to my lips. Several repeats. And a good many homebrews.

One hundred twenty-three seems quite a lot. At this rate, I could hit nearly 500. I don’t think that will happen, as I’ve judged at two homebrew competitions in this quarter, and can only really see myself judging one more time this year.

Though hope remains for putting up some good numbers: Kyle and I are heading to Madison to try to score Great Taste of the Midwest tickets. There will be beers consumed that weekend, and if last year is any indication, I should pull around a hundered during Great Taste weekend alone.

Since there’s actually quite a lot of effort in documenting these beers, the number I’m really looking forward to is 31. December 31. So I can get back to just enjoying them.

Seems like this would be a good time for a prize. If you can guess how many different beers Wilson, The Brewvana Guy, will drink this year, you should get something. Post your guess as a comment and I will ponder a prize.
