Thirsty Thursday–Hopluia

From Spilker Ales, in Cortland, Nebraska, comes Hopluia, a hoppy, canned libation worthy of mention. Compliments of my wonderful beer wife’s recent trip to Omaha, I found that this is the kind of beer you might drink several of without realizing it.

It poured a pleasing amber-orange, with a soft blend of pine and floral hop character in the nose. The same hop characteristics worked well with the malt profile, citrus and pine leaning on hop flavor more than bitterness. The bittering was just beyond balanced, but not mean. Hoppy, but soft and friendly.

To me, this would be a great refrigerator standby for last-minute grilling or unannounced visitors. It’s got flavor to be proud of, without being aggressive or overbearing. And since it’s canned, Hopluia’s a primo candidate for the beach, golf course or camping.
